The White Beaches of Portoferraio

Perhaps not everyone knows that Portoferraio reserves among the most beautiful beaches on the Island of Elba. These are the beaches behind it, along the North Coast that starts from the Villa dei Mulini, the ancient residence of Napoleone and, after about ten kilometers reaches the Enfola peninsula.

The White Beaches are called for its characteristic of the shimmering white cliffs that dominate the beaches formed by small white eurite pebbles with blue-grey drops, once defined the sweat drops of the Argonants in search of the Golden Fleece.

The coast has a crystalline sea, to be admired when the scirocco wind blows; then the sea is flat as a table and you can see the seabed at several meters of depht, very rich in fish thanks also to the marine reserve established years ago and which encloses that stretch of sea from Portoferraio to the Scoglietto - the Islet with the Lighthouse - to the beach of Capobianco.

It's a pleasure to watch the moltitude of fish that come eat from your hands If you bring them some bread.

The beaches can be reached from behind Portoferraio along the road that runs alongside the northern coast, they are equipped with small bathing establishments but, whoever wants, can find plenty of free space.

The beaches are Le Ghiaie, Padulella, Sottobomba, Prunini, Acquaviva, Sansone, Enfola and Viticcio. In the old town of Portoferraio there is a beach called Le Viste, just under Napoleons residence, with a small bar/restaurant.
